Geopolitical position: Nizhny Novgorod region is located in the center of the European part of the Russian Federation on the East European (also known as Russian) plain, equally spaced (over a thousand km) from the western, northern, and southern seas.
Nizhny Novgorod region boards Kostroma region (northwest), Kirov region (northeast), Mari El and Chuvashia (east), Mordovia (south), Ryazan region (southwest), Vladimir and Ivanovo regions (west).
There are about 18,9K km of public roads and over 1,2K km of railways in the region. The international airport is located at a 12 km distance from the regional center. In addition, over 1,1K km of navigate waterways are extended across the region. The main waterway is the Volga, the largest river in Europe. The Volga’s depths required for regular navigation have been maintained since the construction of the hydroelectric power chain. Nizhny Novgorod region is connected with all the seas of the European part of Russia (the Baltic, the White, the Azov, the Black, the Caspian), as well as with Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and the Ural by waterways via the Volga, its tributary Oka and channel system.
Over 9000 rivers and streams with total length of 32000 km flow through the region, 600 rivers have the length over 10 km. The large tributaries on the right of the Volga (the Oka and the Sura) are navigable. The main left tributaries are the Vetluga and the Kerzhenets. Many water tourism enthusiasts are attracted by the scenic riverside. Also about 3000 lakes and water storages are located in the region.
Economic and scientific resources: Nizhny Novgorod region is one of largest industrial centers in Russia with a high level of processing industries. The region is among the top ten Russian regions with the largest volumes of shipped production, manufactured by processing industries.
The region excels at unique scientific and technical resources of the defense industry complex combined with extensive educational capabilities. According to independent experts, the innovative capacity of Nizhny Novgorod region ranks fourth in Russia (after Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Moscow region).
ВScientific research and development is performed by 90 regional organizations, including 4 institutes and 2 branches of Moscow institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences; 66 scientific research institutes (including Russian Federal Nuclear Center – VNIIEF). The region leads in the number of research institutes in the Volga Federal District and ranks fourth in the number of scientists and researches in Russia.
Regional researches have created various scientific schools accepted worldwide: radiophysics and electronic engineering, including micro-structured solids physics; nuclear and laser physics; high energy physics; nonlinear dynamics; metal-organic chemistry; high-purity substances chemistry; microbiology; high tech medicine: cardiology, traumatology and orthopedics.
Active integration of the region into the system of world economic affairs is achieved by transparent, wholesome, business-oriented policy of local authorities, favorable geographic position and well-developed infrastructure. The region favours external commercial relations with many foreign countries and entices Russian and foreign investors. At present, about 130 far-abroad countries and countries of the former Soviet Union are the region’s business partners. Small and medium businesses make significant contribution to the region’s economy. The number of people employed in this sector is over 30% of the general employment in the region. Currently Nizhny Novgorod region is among the top ten Russian regions with the highest development of small business.
